The Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team posted its third consecutive shutout on Monday, defeating Middle Georgia State 2-0. The Grizzlies have not allowed a goal since Aug. 22, outscoring their opponents 17-0.
“I am very pleased with the number of chances we are creating off our defensive pressure,” stated GGC head coach Chris Kouns. “This pressure is a key component of our overall success. Through five games, we have tallied almost 120 shots, and we will continue to strive for more in the future games.”
The Grizzlies (4-1) carried a 1-0 lead into the break as Tiffany Rodriguez netted the contest’s first goal. From 25 yards out, Rodriguez made room between herself and the Middle Georgia State defender, stepped to her left, and fired a left-footed strike to the back of the net.
Georgia Gwinnett sealed the victory in the 76th minute on a point-blank strike by junior midfielder Dominique Fletcher. Rodriguez lifted a free kick from the far left corner of the field through the box to Fletcher. The McDonough, Ga., native gathered the chip shot and poked the ball over the outreached hands of the Knights’ goalkeeper to net the second and final goal of the evening, securing the 2-0 victory in favor of the Grizzlies.
Kouns continued, “I’ve been really proud of the defensive improvement. The back line has posted three straight shutouts and has only given up four goals this season. If we continue to gel and grow as a team at this rate, we will do some special things this year!”
Georgia Gwinnett is back in action on Friday when they travel to Daytona Beach, Fla., to face NCAA Division II Eckerd (Fla.) foe at 3:30 p.m. in the first of two matches for the weekend. While in Central Florida, the Grizzlies will also face host Embry-Riddle on Sept. 11 at 11 a.m.
