The Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team enters Saturday’s 7:00 p.m. matchup against Columbia International (S.C.) in search of its third consecutive win. In their last two contests, the Grizzlies have collected wins against Life University (Ga.), 4-0, and Brewton-Parker (Ga.), 3-1.
The Grizzlies are just six wins away from reaching the 60 wins mark in the program’s brief four-year history and boast a 26-9-6 record at the Grizzly Soccer Complex.
GGC continues to be led by senior goalkeeper Lewis Sharpe. The Englishman has surrendered just one goal through three games while making 16 saves. Sharpe collected his first shutout of the season against St. Thomas (Fla.) in the Grizzlies’ season opener and was named the Association of Independent Institutions’ Player of the Week on Monday.
Samuel Sampaio Gomes has also made an impact on the Grizzlies’ last two victories, scoring goals in both contests. The Aachen, Germany, native has started in all three of GGC’s matches and is ninth in the NAIA in game-winning goals.
Columbia International is off to a 2-1 start in 2016. The Rams dropped their season opener to No. 13 Union (Ky.), but rebounded with two straight shutout wins over the Cumberlands (Ky.) and Trinity Baptist (Fla.). Three different Rams, Nolan Dorton, Graham Jermstad, and Zach Wolfenden, have netted goals in 2016 while Columbia International has seen two key performances by senior goalkeeper Luke Brooks. Brooks has recorded back-to-back shutouts, tallying 12 total saves while surrendering just three goals.
“Our guys continue to show growth, focus, and desire each day,” stated GGC head coach Steve DeCou. “On Saturday, we plan to take those attributes and piece them together for another winning effort.”
Tickets for Saturday’s match are $5 for adults, $3 for youth, seniors, and military, and free for children under five. All members of the GGC community receive free admission with their Claw Card.
