Over 200 middle and high school students from the Georgia High School Cycling League (GHSCL) raced their way through the rolling hills and twisty turns of the Georgia International Horse Park MTB Trails this past Sunday in their first race of the 2015 season. It was a beautiful day for Mountain Bike Racing as parents and friends made a day of it with their tents, chairs, and cowbells to cheer on their favorite team and riders. The 2014 Team Champion, Habersham Central Raiders, started this 2015 season looking to race their way to another Championship, but, it looks like they will have some steep competition from the Hall County Prima Tappa Team, who took 1st place in Sunday’s Centennial Olympic Challenge. The Fannin County Composite Team took second, and an impressive newcomer to the league, the Athens Area Mountain Bike Team, took a strong third place.
The anticipation of some tight races in the Individual Divisions made for an exciting day on the race track! Chase Key from the Fannin County Composite team took 1st place overall in the Boys Varsity race, while 2014 Varsity Girls Champion, Molly Hayes, Hall County Prima Tappa, team continued her winning ways, taking 1st place in the Varsity Girls Division. Kate Tawes – JV Roswell Composite Team, Kristen Brown – Sophomore Habersham Central Team, and Ellie Hayes – Freshman Hall County Prima Tappa, all landed a 1st place spot on the girls podium. Marco Newman, Athens Area MTB Team, took overall 1st place in the JV Boys race, while Hayden Dillon, Blankets Creek Team, and Joshua Dumford, Blankets Creek Team, won 1st in the Boys Sophomore and Freshman divisions.
Interest in the league has been so great from parents and students; the league added a middle school program for the 2015 season for grades 6 – 8. Over 80 middle school boys and girls participated in Sunday’s inaugural Middle School Novice and Advanced races. Girls Middle School Novice and Advance 1st place winners included Katharine Davis, Altoona Creek Composite Team, and Lily Gowens, Hall County Prima Tappa. Ben Tolliday, Pace Academy Team and Logan Pelton, Anderson, SC team took home the 1st place medals in the Boys Middle School Novice and Advanced categories.
