Women’s Soccer Opens Fall 2014 Season Sunday in Lawrenceville

GGC's women's soccer team

The 2014 season has arrived for the Georgia Gwinnett women’s soccer team.

The Grizzlies look to start off on the right foot when they welcome Faulkner (Ala.) this Sunday, Aug. 24, to the Grizzly Soccer Complex in Lawrenceville for the season opener.

Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.

It will be the third straight season opener at home for GGC, where the Grizzlies look to win once more. The team notched a 9-1 win in its program debut in 2012 over Tennessee Temple before outlasting SCAD Savannah a year ago, 2-1.

The matchup will be the second-ever meeting between GGC and Faulkner after the Grizzlies’ 2-1 win in Montgomery a season ago.

Georgia Gwinnett has posted a 24-11-2 program record over its first two seasons, including a 14-5 record at home.

Faulkner, of the Southern States Athletic Conference, comes off an 8-11 season in 2013 and will play a pair of games on Thursday and Saturday before coming to Lawrenceville.

The Grizzlies are receiving votes in the NAIA Women’s Soccer Coaches’ Top 25 Poll.

“Faulkner will be a great test,” said GGC head coach Domenic Martelli. “They are one of the better-coached teams that we will play this fall. They have a lot of experience on the roster from reaching the national tournament two seasons ago. Their style of play and competitiveness- being from one of the top conferences in the nation- will give us the best game possible to see where we are and prepare us for the season.”

Ticket proceeds this Sunday will be donated to the ALS Association of Georgia, as Director of Athletics Dr. Darin S. Wilson pledged for the Grizzlies to partner in the fight to strike out ALS when accepting the Ice Bucket Challenge earlier this month. A representative from the Georgia Chapter will be on hand for a halftime recognition.

Also at halftime, head coach Chase Hodges and the Georgia Gwinnett men’s and women’s tennis teams will be presented with their 2014 national championship rings. The title trophies will be on hand for fans to view.

General admission tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for youth/senior/military and free for children under 5. Members of the GGC community are admitted for free with a valid Claw Card. More information here.

“Our Opening Day game is going to be a fantastic event so we look forward to welcoming an excellent crowd out there,” said Dr. Wilson. “This will kick off the 2014-15 season for Grizzly Athletics, which we hope will be filled with many more achievements.”

The game will be broadcast live online on the Grizzly Digital Network, with Voice of the Grizzlies Matt Mahony beginning the pregame show at 2:45 p.m. Live stats also will be available in the broadcast portal, which is accessible for free all year long for regular season contests.
