The essence of the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour is giving back to the communities in which they are located. The Greater Gwinnett Championship Presented by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating, Atlanta’s second-year Champions Tour event, fits that formula to a tee. This year’s tournament raised a total of $178,160 for various area charities. The main beneficiaries of the 2014 event were Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Georgia Gwinnett College Foundation, and Gwinnett Medical Center Foundation.

“We continue to recognize the importance of our charitable partners and how this event makes a direct positive contribution to our community,” said Stan Hall, Executive Director of the Greater Gwinnett Championship. “We are honored to host an event that gives so much back to those in need.”

Proceeds came from not only the tournament itself but from several tournament-related activities such as the Matt Ryan Celebrity-Am Classic, Executive Women’s Day, Tasting on the Tee Presented by Infiniti of Gwinnett and the inaugural Novelis Celebrity Challenge. The latter event consisted of baseball hall of famer, Tom Glavine, future baseball hall of famer John Smoltz, and former Georgia Bulldog and Chicago Bears kicker Kevin Butler who competed to raise dollars for various areas at the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta.

The 2014 Greater Gwinnett Championship was won by Miguel Angel Jimenez and attracted some of the most recognizable names in golf, including World Golf Hall of Fame members Fred Couples, Bernhard Langer, Curtis Strange, Ben Crenshaw, Sandy Lyle, Colin Montgomerie, and Larry Nelson. Other notable Champions Tour professionals who played in the event included Rocco Mediate, Kenny Perry, Mark Calcavecchia, John Cook, Fred Funk, and Corey Pavin.
