Trio is the first group of GGC players to ever be selected

Seniors John Fidanza, Zeke McGranahan and Tyler Carpenter were all selected on Saturday on day three of the 2014 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, making history as the first Grizzly players to be selected by MLB franchises.

First were Fidanza and McGranahan, who were taken with back-to-back picks in the 23rd round. Fidanza was chosen by the Arizona Diamondbacks, while McGranahan was selected by the Baltimore Orioles.

Next came Carpenter, taken in the 25th round by the Anaheim Angels.

A catcher from Zachary, La., Fidanza played in 51 games this season for the Grizzlies, throwing out 17 of the 33 runners who tried to steal against him. At the plate, the switch hitter drove in 29 runs with seven doubles and was named to the World Series All-Tournament Team.

A right-handed pitcher from Durham, N.C., McGranahan recorded a team-high 30 relief appearances and seven saves for the Grizzlies this season. He posted a 3-3 record with a 2.12 ERA, striking out 39 batters in 34.0 innings. Opponents batted just .189 against him on the year.

A right-handed pitcher from Milton, Ga., Carpenter was an NAIA All-American honorable mention this season. He went 8-2 with a 2.43 ERA, racking up a team-high 98 strikeouts in 103.2 innings pitched. He is the first draftee among the Grizzlies’ inaugural signing class, having played two seasons at GGC. He departs as the program’s innings (173.0) and strikeouts (166) leader.

The group helped lead the Grizzlies to a 53-13 record in 2014 and the program’s first Avista-NAIA World Series berth.

“We are thrilled for John, Zeke, Tyler and the whole Grizzly Baseball family,” said GGC head coach Brad Stromdahl. “We expect that this is the first of many opportunities for our student-athletes to pursue their dreams of playing professional baseball. These guys have worked very hard for this chance and they will always be remembered for their contributions to the Grizzly Baseball program.”

The signing deadline for players selected in the MLB First-Year Player Draft is July 18.

Previous GGC signees had been drafted by MLB franchises but did not play for the Grizzlies.
