The field has been set for the 2014 Association of Independent Institutions championship tournament, which will be held at the Grizzly Softball Complex in Lawrenceville, Ga., May 1-3.
A highly-competitive six-team field consists of two of the nation’s top five teams and four top-35 squads.
Two automatic berths to the NAIA national tournament are on the line.
The host Grizzlies (34-8-1) have earned the fourth seed for the double-elimination A.I.I. tournament.
Georgia Gwinnett is in just its second season and is currently receiving national votes in the NAIA Softball Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. The Grizzlies have a 15-5 record this year on their home field, which is in its first full season of existence.
The tournament’s top seed goes to NAIA No. 3 Louisiana State University at Alexandria (28-3), while NAIA No. 5 California State University San Marcos (33-5-1) has claimed the number two seed.
The third seed will be the University of Houston-Victoria (28-11), which stands at No. 19 in the latest coaches’ poll.
Lindenwood University-Belleville (Ill.) (22-17-1) is the fifth seed, while the tournament’s sixth and final seed hails all the way from Vancouver, British Columbia, with the University of British Columbia (14-13).
Action begins with the opening round Thursday, May 1, at 11 a.m. in Lawrenceville. See bracket attached for full tournament schedule.
Tickets to each day of the tournament will be available on site and will be $7 for adults and $5 for students (age five through college age), seniors (age 55 and over) and active-duty military. Children under five are free.
Members of the Georgia Gwinnett College community with a valid Claw Card are free. Grizzly Season Passes will not be honored for postseason play.
Bleacher seating for around 500 fans is available.
Free parking is located in the parking deck at the main entrance to the GGC campus (1000 University Center Lane, Lawrenceville, Ga. 30043). Handicapped drop-off access is located adjacent to the ticket building and a shuttle to the field is available upon request.
All games will be video streamed live online on the Grizzly Digital Network with play-by-play commentary from Voice of the Grizzlies Matt Mahony. Games involving GGC will be free of charge while all non-GGC contests are available for $7.95 through Stretch Internet, LLC. Live stats also will be available for each contest.
The winner and runner-up of the tournament will each earn automatic berths to the NAIA Opening Round, May 12-14, at national sites announced Wednesday. The NAIA National Championships will be held May 23-29 at the South Commons Softball Complex in Columbus, Ga.
The Grizzly Softball Complex was opened in April 2013 and features a state-of-the-art natural grass playing surface.
All teams will take part in the championship banquet, held Wednesday evening, April 30, on the GGC campus, hosted by Grizzly Athletics administration.
