Inaugural event to feature Tom Glavine, John Smoltz and Kevin Butler
The Greater Gwinnett Championship Presented by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating announced today a three-year partnership with Novelis to sponsor the Novelis Celebrity Challenge. The Novelis Celebrity Challenge will take place on April 19th during the second round of the Greater Gwinnett Championship, and will feature three local Atlanta-based celebrities inserted into the Championship to play a “competitive” round of golf for charity. This year’s celebrity threesome will be former Atlanta Brave greats Tom Glavine and John Smoltz, who will be joined by former Georgia Bulldog and Chicago Bears placekicker, Kevin Butler.
These three Atlanta sports figures will be competing for far more than pride and bragging rights. A donation to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, one of the leading pediatric cancer facilities in the country, will be made on behalf of the celebrities. Each will be playing for a specific area of need including clinical research, sickle cell and Family support. “We are pleased to partner with the Greater Gwinnett Championship to present the Novelis Celebrity Challenge,” said Phil Martens, President and Chief Executive Officer, Novelis. “Most importantly, we are happy to support the important work of Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, right here in our hometown.”
The Novelis Celebrity Challenge is just one more event tied to the Greater Gwinnett Championship tournament week. Other special events include the Matt Ryan Celebrity-Am Classic and Executive Women’s Day on Monday, State Bank Kickoff Party on Tuesday, State Bank Pro-Am on Wednesday and Thursday, and Kids Day and Easter activities on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
“The addition of the Novelis Celebrity Challenge helps to solidify the Greater Gwinnett Championship as a premier event in the metro Atlanta area,” states Stan Hall, Executive Director of the tournament. “There is something for everyone at our event from the hardcore golf fan to the person who wants to enjoy a great day outside with friends enjoying the beautiful surroundings at TPC Sugarloaf” continued Hall.
