Miguel Angel Jimenez to Make Champions Tour Debut at the Greater Gwinnett Championship
Miguel Angel Jimenez, who ranks 41st in the Official World Golf Rankings, will make his Champions Tour debut in the 2nd annual Greater Gwinnett Championship Presented by Mitsubishi Electric Cooling & Heating, an Official Event on the PGA TOUR’s Champions Tour. The tournament will be playedApril 14-20, 2014 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, GA. In addition to Jimenez, 80 other legends of golf including the defending champion, Bernhard Langer, Tom Kite and Mark O’Meara will be competing for a total purse of $1.8 million and a first place check of $270,000.
A native of Malaga in southern Spain, Jimenez has won 20 times on the European Tour over the years since joining the circuit full time in 1989, with four of his tournament successes coming at the Hong Kong Open. He has finished inside the top 100 on the European Tour Order of Merit every season since 1989. In 1994 he finished fifth on the Order of Merit and fourth in 1998, 1999, 2004, when he won on four occasions, and in 2008. His biggest wins as a profesional have been the season ending Volvo Masters in Spain in 1999 and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth Club in the UK in 2009. In 1999 he also came in second in the WGC-American Express Championship, and made his first of four Ryder Cup appearances. Jimenez has also played on 14 World Cup teams for Spain. He is the only 50-year old in the top 50 of the Official World Golf Ranking which will put him in the 2014 Masters field the week before the Greater Gwinnett Championship.
