The Georgia Gwinnett College Office of Athletics has formed its first Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), effective immediately.

The committee is a student-athlete-driven group that will work to accomplish its mission of “Enhancing the total student-athlete experience by fostering UNITY among all GGC student-athletes, developing a HEART for our community and cultivating healthy COMMUNICATION between student-athletes and the Athletics administration.”

Two representatives from each of the Grizzlies’ six teams were voted to fill the inaugural 12-person committee.

Jovanni Cruz, a junior baseball player from Grayson, has been elected SAAC President.

The committee is overseen by Athletics Facilities and Events Manager Sean Gillespie and will coordinate on-campus events, efforts in the community and promote an atmosphere of effective communication.

Additional SAAC officers include Vice President Lewis Sharpe (freshman soccer player from Newcastle, England), Secretary Haley Thompson (sophomore softball player from Nicholson) and Treasurer Sara Lindell (junior soccer player from Varmdo, Sweden).

Inaugural committee members will serve through the spring 2015 semester, whereupon new members will be elected for one-year terms.

“The SAAC is going to play a vital role in the success of our student-athletes at GGC,” said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, GGC’s Director of Athletics. “We are eager to get started and allow our student-athlete leaders to help shape the overall Grizzly Athletics experience under the leadership of Sean Gillespie.”
