Grizzlies Post Strongest Semester Yet in the Classroom

In a fall season that saw continued success on the field, the Georgia Gwinnett College student-athlete population inched closer to a 3.0 overall GPA by posting a 2.92, the highest yet for the college’s over 130 intercollegiate athletes.

Sixty-six student-athletes- slightly more than half- earned a spot on the Director of Athletics’ Honor Roll with a 3.0 or better for the semester. Included in that tally are 14 players who earned a 3.5 and seven that achieved a 4.0 during the fall.

The men’s tennis team led the way once more with a 3.46 overall mark, while women’s tennis led all women’s squads with a 3.16.

The softball team also posted a 3.00, as the Grizzlies implemented new student-athlete academic support features during the semester.

With the Grizzly Athletics Complex open for the first time in the fall, Athletics staff enhanced its academic support system with study hall hours, one-on-one tutors and team mentors. The players utilize a dedicated student-athlete study lounge and individual study space just steps from where they train and prepare for athletic competition.

“We are very pleased that our student-athletes are embracing the total experience at GGC and what it means to be part of Grizzly Athletics,” said Dr. Darin S. Wilson, Director of Athletics. “Our goal of an overall 3.0 GPA is in our sights and we intend to achieve that soon with continued hard work. We made a lot of progress this semester department-wide, led by the efforts of Dr. Ian Potter, our Assistant AD for Academic Services.”

The Grizzlies posted 15- and 14-win seasons in the fall in men’s and women’s soccer, respectively, competing in the program’s first postseason and national tournaments. The baseball, softball and men’s and women’s tennis seasons begin around the first week of February as each squad competes for its first postseason opportunities.

The spring 2014 semester begins Jan. 8.
