Grizzlies open spring season with First Serve Bash Friday, Feb. 1

Gwinnett GrizzliesTennis

With the Georgia Gwinnett Grizzlies opening their first spring season of tennis, baseball and softball, the Office of Athletics will host a First Serve celebration on Friday, Feb. 1, before the historic, first men’s tennis match.

The event will take place at the GGC Tennis Facility at 100 Countryside Place, just north of the GGC main campus off Collins Hill Road in Lawrenceville. The Grizzly tennis, baseball and softball teams will be introduced and available to sign team posters.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m., just before the men’s tennis match against Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) at 2 p.m.

GGC fans, students, faculty and staff are encouraged to come celebrate the student-athletes and cheer on the Grizzlies as the men’s tennis team takes the courts for the very first time. Admission is free and parking is available at the GGC Tennis Facility.

Georgia Gwinnett College President Dr. Daniel Kaufman and Dr. Darin Wilson, director of Athletics, are expected to address the crowd and kick off the spring season.

The Grizzlies are slated to begin their first season of intercollegiate competition in baseball and softball on Feb. 9, followed by the debut of women’s tennis on Feb. 11.

About the Tennis Match

Friday marks another exciting first for Georgia Gwinnett College with the opening tennis match in program history.

The SCAD Bees, a fellow member of the NAIA, went 3-9 on the court last season and 2-4 in the Sun Conference.

The Grizzlies will carry a nine-man lineup into opening day, featuring five freshmen and four juniors.

Georgia Gwinnett head coach Chase Hodges brings a 246-92 (.728) career coaching record into his tenure at GGC. He holds the distinction of being the first coach to guide five separate programs to a national ranking at the NCAA level.

Friday’s opener will mark a new chapter and the first test for his GGC squad.

“Our program is very excited for our first match in school history,” says Hodges. “I expect a very competitive match against SCAD and I know our guys will be ready for the challenge.”

Matches are played in a nine-point format, with three doubles points and six singles points available. Players may compete in both, and the team that earns five or more total points claims the match.

The Grizzlies will turn around quickly to host NCAA Division III foe Covenant College on Saturday at noon at the GGC Tennis Facility.
