GGC Men’s Soccer: Grizzlies Land Trio on All-Region Squad

The Georgia Gwinnett men’s soccer team placed three players on the 2012 NAIA Men’s All-East Region team as voted by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Senior goalkeeper Greg Hartley, senior forward Tom Butler and freshman midfielder Ibrahima Sissoko each were named to the Honorable Mention list as just 18 total players were picked for the squad.

The trio led the Grizzlies to an outstanding 14-2-2 record in their first season of play in 2012. GGC outscored its opponents on the year by a 93-9 mark, with Butler and Sissoko accounting for over a third of the team’s scoring.

“I am excited for the three guys to be honored for their work on the field this season,” said head coach Steve DeCou. “We didn’t think we would receive any postseason awards due to our status as a first-year NAIA member, but to find out that three of our players received honors, that is quite an achievement.”

Hartley, a native of Manchester, England, yielded just eight scores on the season while making 38 stops. The senior helped GGC post 11 shutouts as the defense did not allow more than two scores in any game.

Butler, originally from Birmingham, England, tallied a stellar 28 goals on the Grizzly attack. He scored five times in the team’s first-ever win and added nine assists on the season for a team-high 65 points to establish the GGC record.

Sissoko starred in his rookie season with 27 total points, second only on the team to Butler. The Norcross product finished with 10 goals and posted the game-winner against Crown College Oct. 12.
